IV. Necessary Addendums to Kyoto With the increase in globalization comes an increase in air travel and maritime transport. Both play a key role in the global economy but also play a lead role in worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. Aviation makes up the fastest growing GHG emission sector in the world; accounting for 3% of fossil fuel use worldwide (Eco). Passenger flights have increased by 60% in the last ten years, and are expected to continue growing by 5% every year (IPCC). Although bunker fuels account for such a large part of GHG emissions, they are not accounted for under the Kyoto Protocol. SustainUs realizes the threat bunker fuels pose in accelerating climate change. It is time Parties acknowledge the necessity to take action, halting this growing threat. In Nairobi, SBTSA 25 needs to consider agenda item 7(a) on emissions from fuel used for international aviation and maritime transport. SustainUS believes Parties must move forward on this issue and seek to appropriately set reduction targets on bunker fuels and emissions under the Kyoto Protocol. |
